Silence of the Lambs
Broken Skewer Opener
03/19/05

-
Paul Latrine

Grant Salter and Paul went out for an easy 35 mile ride Saturday on the "Silence of the Lambs" loop. Twenty five miles into the ride Grant's rear skewer snapped, leaving him stranded. One would think with a dilemma like no rear skewer and ten miles of hills between him and his car, Grant would be in deep trouble.

In fact, after further investigation and noting his lack of a cell phone, Grant decided to ride the remainder of the ride WITH NO REAR SKEWER. As a testimonial to the trueness of Serotta's frames the rear wheel tracked perfectly without the slightest amount of brake rub. I would not recommend this exercise to test your frame alignment, but I can tell you that only an accurately aligned frame could accomplish this remarkable feat. 03.19.05

A little bird (must have been a passerby, Dangerous Dan, Kevin, Doug, Twin George, or Humberto) has since reported to American Road Cycling that what is missing from this story is the part where Paul Latrine leaves Grant behind with a promise to go back and get the van, only to get caught by Grant on the very next big climb. Mr. Latrine is very clever and resourceful, so we assume he is now working on replacing Grant's wheels with special square ones including snow chains. We wish Paul the best of luck and are sorry to hear his little "I'll just take away his skewer" trick failed so miserably.
